Non-Profit 'Ticket Donations'
Many venues/organizations offer that a patron may 'donate' a ticket if it goes unused.
As a non-profit rental venue (and occasional presenter) I find the accounting of this to be confusing and complicated.
As the venue I am selling the ticket on behalf of the presenter, so if you want to donate it to me I would have to resell it to have any real value to it right and actually get a donation? I can't resell the ticket really unless I run my own resale channel, assuming I allow resales. I can't take it as a donation afterwards because it has not value to me afterwards.
If I was the presenter I could take a donation of that ticket value by refunding it as a ticket sale on the show and marking it as a donation. I could presumably take this afterwards as well if I allow refunds after the show.
If I'm a copresenter then I can only give them a donation receipt for the portion that would come to the non-profit, or the co-pro refunds the ticket and the value gets donated to the non-profit.
If anyone takes tickets as donations rather than refunds I'd be interested to learn the nitty gritty details that your accountant would have.
